The purpose of this course is to provide an up-to-date grounding in how the Internet and democracy work in the public sphere. This course will begin by examining the following major themes: a) the values embedded in the structure of the early Internet by the people who created it; b) the economics of abundance and the power of platforms; c) the collision between broadcast politics and the networked public sphere; and d) the workings of decentralized, open and networked organizations. The current debate over Internet freedom explores the tension between the newly empowered networked public sphere and private platform providers and the issues surrounding user rights and privacy. At each stage in the course, you will also study critics of Internet utopianism and the need for a balanced and realistic understanding of how net-enabled mass participation can change politics and government for the better. Upon completion, the student should understand how government actors, elected representatives, political advocates and civic activists are adapting to the changing context of public life in the networked age.

This seminar will discuss important areas related to the English Language Teaching (ELT) practitioner such as teacher training, types of systems of schooling (private vs. public), management of ELT, status of English, status of teachers, and native versus non-native teachers of English. The main aim of this student-led seminar will be to allow students to reflect on their professional experiences in general and on one aspect of their experience in depth. Students will decide on topics of relevance to them with the view of the audience, which is the MEd ELT group as a whole. Initially, students will be encouraged to form small groups and explain certain aspects of their teaching/professional contexts to each other, guided by staff. For the main part of the course, students will form loose groups working on similar issues and a timetable of presentations (conference style, controlled timing) to the whole group will be drawn up. This seminar will be a venue for students to discuss issues which are of importance to them and the ELT profession.
